original music & sound design
With Im Mohnfeld (In the Poppy Field), Paloma Muñoz invites the audience on an intense, sensory journey in which bodies remember, unlearn, lose themselves, and find their way back to one another. The piece unfolds as a choreographic landscape in two images: day and night – between the outer world and inner space.
In an open, exploratory process, Muñoz worked with eight dancers to develop a particular physicality that resists clear categorization. The ensemble appears at once human and animal, like a herd, like an organic structure. As in a bucolic painting, they take pleasure in the landscape they inhabit: sometimes instinctive, sometimes controlled – oscillating between surrender and form. With the arrival of night, the atmosphere shifts and the focus moves from outside to inside. The dance becomes trance-like, and the bodies increasingly detach from their precise, finely worked movement structure. Control is shed and forms dissolve.
In doing so, Muñoz and the dancers raise the question of what holds this group together: is there an overarching sense of care for one another? Or do we see fractures – black sheep who don't quite find themselves within this intertwined, finely attuned existence? The choreography opens up space for different interpretations and invites the audience to question their own ideas of nature and belonging. The result is a work that offers less in the way of answers than an experience – a field waiting to be entered.
